Cathal was part of a team of photographers who were awarded a Pulitzer Prize for their work in Bangladesh photographing the Rohingya refugees in 2017. View his work here while listening to the podcast.

Over a million people fled to neighbouring countries where they driven from their homes in Myanmar in what the the United Nations later described as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Growing up in Ireland during the Troubles, Cathal was inspired to become a photojournalist at an early age. He left school to become an apprentice with the Irish News where his first job was to sweep the darkroom floor. He soon became an established photographer in his own right working for newspapers and press agencies in Ireland, Britain and India.

A few days after Cathal and I spoke Myanmar was again in the news this time as a result of a military coup.
While the situation inside Myanmar is not clear we can be fairly certain that the Rohingya refugees will not be returning home soon. I have included links in the description of this podcast for background reading on the situation in Myanmar including a UN fundraising appeal for the displaced Rohingya people.
