Downgrade your iPhone

Most mobile devices have built in digital cameras, they are great and pretty handy for sharing moments on social media. Buying the latest smartphones can often clear out your savings leaving not much money for your all important pinhole camera obsession. Fear not! PaperCamera has you covered with our guide to Downgrading Your Smartphone.

You might have already tried an app to simulate the pinhole effect. Read on and do it for real.

You will need some dark card around 220 gsm, scissors or craft knife, fine abrasive paper aka wet or dry, adhesive tape (Scotch magic tape works best), a ruler and a magnifying glass. You might find it easier to make a number of pinholes at the same time and store them for later projects.

  • Cut a square from your dark card 10mm should be enough.

  • Place a needle on the centre point and tap lightly

  • A small dimple should appear on the rear of the card

  • Take the abrasive paper and work the dimple until flat or the pinhole begins to appear

  • Insert the pin in the hole and rotate litely to widen

  • Repeat the process as necessary to obtain the desired pinhole size.

  • Cut a piece of adhesive tape large enough cover the card with the pinhole. With the scissors remove the centre of the tape, this is where the pinhole will be positioned.

  • Place the card with the pinhole on the adhesive side of the tape so that the pinhole is not obstructed by the tape.

  • Now position your pinhole over the camera lens of your phone. You will find it easier to position the pinhole if you camera is on at this point.

  • You will immediately see the pinhole effect.

Upload your photos to the Flickr page. We’d all love to see them.

Disclaimer. Smartphones and tablet devices normally have a shiny high gloss finish and they are never cheap. If you're not comfortable putting a piece of sticking tape on your device then please try one of the other projects on the website. Scotch Magic tape works best but beware of any adhesive on any surface for a prolonged period.
